Scrivener → EPUB → listen: a Mac workflow for draft ears-on

The missing piece is rarely another outlining tip. It is a boring listen-through of the draft you just compiled, on the same Mac, without a cloud TTS queue.

Writers who live in Scrivener usually already have a compile path to EPUB or PDF. The missing piece is rarely “another outlining tip.” It is a boring listen-through of the draft you just compiled — on the same Mac — without shipping the manuscript to a cloud TTS queue first.

This article is audiobook-factory only (private listen / revise loop). It is not a family bedtime piece.

Why ears-on beats another silent pass

Silent rereads hide:

A local speak-through is a cheap “draft narrator” for coverage and iteration, not a claim that synthetic audio replaces a human performance you would sell.

The workflow (keep Scrivener as source of truth)

  1. Compile in Scrivener to EPUB (preferred) or a clean text-friendly PDF. Chapter/section structure in the compile settings pays off later.
  2. Drop the export on the Mac — same machine you write on. No upload gate before first listen.
  3. Listen in sections that match your Scrivener binder (chapter, scene, or document group). Scrubbing a three-hour blob is how listen-throughs die.
  4. Note fixes in Scrivener, not in the audio file. Audio is the review surface; the binder stays canonical.
  5. Optional: when the draft is stable enough for personal carry, export M4B-friendly listening files for walks. Still your pipeline, not a storefront SKU.
